DESPITE its miniscule size and 1.0-litre engine the Peugeot 107 is decent fun to drive because it revs sweetly and sounds lovely.

It often feels quicker than it really is and this also adds to the fun of driving one.

The shape and much of the spec are shared with the Toyota Aygo and Citroen C1, and they're all built in the same French factory.

Toyota did the development and supply the engine, and with 67bhp in such a light body, it feels nippy and responsive up to motorway speeds.

It will also average an excellent 60mpg with a little care and since it comes with group one insurance, it's an excellent second or starter car.

There have been numerous special editions with added spec in the Peugeot range, plus changes to outward styling, but all models up to the latest released last year were unchanged under the skin.

The ride is acceptable most of the time, but it is noisy at higher speeds, as you would expect for a car in the very cheapest segment of the market.

It feels nippy and responsive as long as you use the gears and the revs but overtaking is an art.

The thrum of the engine adds tremendously to its appeal and the road holding and handling are good enough to bring a smile to anyone's face.

Sport models have alloy wheels, twin exhausts, extra colour inside and a large stripe.

The boot is tiny, but there is just about enough interior space for four adults over short journeys, and the rear seats split fold.

Power steering and light controls make all models very easy to drive and even basic equipment includes central locking and electric windows.
