LAND Rover is claiming the new Range Rover Evoque Convertible will be the most capable open top model in the world.

To demonstrate the car's abilities the company has just released footage of the new Evoque in its final shakedown at the legendary Eastnor Castle proving ground in Herefordshire.

This is where Land Rover has tested every one of its vehicles for more than 50 years and the off-road track is renowned for its severe conditions.

Like the hard top version of the Evoque, the open top model is fitted with Land Rover's computerised Terrain Response system which enables it to find maximum grip wherever it goes.

It also features the company's new All Terrain Progress Control set up which automatically enables it to keep going over the harshest terrain and wade through water up to half a metre deep.

Land Rover's engineers say that despite losing its all-metal frame, the convertible has retained plenty of rigidity to give it similar handling characteristics as the coupe and five-door models.

The new Evoque will make its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show next month and is due to hit the streets early next year.

As a teaser for the launch Land Rover has already placed six full-scale wireframe sculptures outside London landmarks.

In the video a camouflaged version of the Evoque Convertible is seen championing the same courses as used to test out the original Range Rover back in the 1970s as well as earlier ‘go-anywhere' models such as the Series ll Land Rover which was developed at Eastnor in the early 1960s.

As the late Spen King, the Range Rover chief programme engineer from 1967 to 1989, said: "If it can get around the Eastnor estate, it can go anywhere!"

Describing the new convertible, Land Rover's test drive chief Mike Cross said: "Land Rover prides itself on being a class leader when it comes to all-terrain capability and the Evoque Convertible is no different.

"Thanks to a combination of innovative engineering and the application of advanced technologies, Evoque Convertible will deliver a dynamic and assured SUV experience that has been tested around the world. We call it ‘The Convertible for all Seasons'."
