FIAT recently revamped the Doblo people carrier - with the result a big improvement in both looks and technology.

The van-based MPV further distanced itself from its cargo carrying cousin thanks to an extensive facelift any Hollywood star would be proud of.

The changes see the introduction of a completely restyled front section with built in light clusters, natty new headlights and a re-styled bumper, while the rear gets a sleeker look thanks to an eye-catching tail-light design.

Sharp alloys and more body-coloured bits and bobs complete the look ensuring this is one motor that can't be ignored.

The extra-large sliding doors give easy access to the interior while the Lounge model I drove comes with all-around one-shot electric windows.

Being based on a van's design the Doblo has always offered lots of interior space with the option of seating for seven and innovative storage ideas to cater for the clutter family motoring inevitably entails.

This includes aeroplane-style overhead storage, a parcel shelf, numerous cup and bottle holders and a lockable glove compartment large enough for a laptop. There are even storage compartments in the floor.

Fiat's people carrier is crammed full of smart technology with a rejigged range leaving all models benefiting from more equipment fitted as standard.

Even the entry-level Pop trim gets remote central locking while the mid-spec Easy version adds fog lights, electric mirrors, steering wheel audio controls and seat height adjustment.

The flagship Lounge model also includes air conditioning, rear parking sensors, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and a leather steering wheel in what is a value for money package.

For £250 you can add the optional Stop & Start system to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while Fiat's Family Pack featuring seven seats, longitudinal roof bars and rear window quarter lights comes in at £830.

There is also a raft of new safety features such as a tyre pressure monitoring system, stability control, hill hold and hydraulic brake assist. As well as a plethora of airbags the cabin also boasts controlled crumple zones that absorb the energy of an impact and the doors are designed not to open accidentally during a crash.

The potent 1.6-litre diesel under the bonnet of the Doblo I drove is part of two-engine range that kicks off off with the 1.4-litre petrol.

The oil burner provides plenty of grunt propelling the not inconsiderable bulk of the Doblo from a standing start to 62mph in shade over 13 seconds. That time looks pretty pedestrian but the people carrier is no slouch when the lights turn green.

Minor alterations have been made to the gearshift and throttle which make it better to drive while exterior noise is kept out of the cabin thanks to better insulation.

The ride is comfortable due to the efforts of an efficient suspension which ably absorbs vibration on uneven road surfaces while levels of grip are reassuring and the steering gives good feedback to the driver.
