Hyundai Tucson, millionth Hyundai sold in Britain

A MONTAGE of more than half a million images of London has been created by Hyundai in a drive around the streets of the capital in a zero emission hydrogen-fuelled vehicle.

Following the 2,092 mile route of the London Cabbies' Knowledge a Hyundai xi35 Fuel Cell vehicle drove for 50 days capturing a continuous view of every road and landmark in the heart of the city.

The Streetcar Named Hyundai project was created to mark the Korean car maker's 10 anniversary of its UK operations and ended as it notched up its millionth vehicle sale in Britain.

The final picture depicts Oxford Street and is made up of 503,919 tiny photographs stitched together in order to create a mosaic measuring 24 feet long and six feet high.

It will go on display at London's City Hall in March 2016, as part of Hydrogen Week to promote emission free driving.

Hyundai has also produced a time-lapse video of the drive which runs for 200.5 seconds, marking the year its UK subsidiary started business.

The drive was mapped by the same Ordnance Survey team that delivered the Olympic torch route and is the first time the famous Cabbie Knowledge has been routed as one continuous drive to cover every street in a six mile radius of Charing Cross.

Over the 50 days 127 drivers took part in the challenge including British Olympic boxing champion Nicola Adams, reality TV star Jamie Laing from Made In Chelsea and WRC driver and co-driver Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul.

Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai Motor UK's president and CEO, said: "This unique activity has all been about showcasing London from a different perspective - just as we want people to view Hyundai from a different perspective."

Hyundai created entirely new software to capture the drive which controlled the camera shutter, based on the car's speed, distance travelled and angle of travel to frame the entire journey photographically. The camera took pictures every 20 feet and captured 207,000 MB of data.

London taxi driver and knowledge teacher of 30 years, Tony Norris said: "The Cabbie Knowledge is world renowned, unique to London and takes an average of three to four years to complete.

"But, this is the first time that the entire six mile radius has been routed in this way as one continuous drive. I'm not surprised it took 50 days, with the London traffic and unpredictability of London streets, it's a really impressive achievement."

The ix35 used in the challenge is priced from £53,105 and is the first fuel cell vehicle to go on general sale in Britain.

It uses hydrogen to generate electricity and has a range of 369 pollution-free miles with the only waste product being water - an achievement recently recognised by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers who picked the ix35 Fuel Cell as its winner in the design/innovation section of its annual awards.

The Streetcar mosaic was revealed at a special event staged at the Sunbeam Studios in Shepherd's Bush, London, where Mr Whitehorn also announced the company's millionth sale in the UK since it first started importing vehicles in 1982.

Its first car was a Pony hatchback and the millionth model is the latest Tucson SUV which it is to give away to a deserving driver in a ‘One in a Million' competition where people can make nominations on Hyundai UK's Facebook wall at , on Twitter at @Hyundai_UK and on Instagram at @hyundaiuk using the hashtag #M1LLION.

The giveaway runs for a million seconds from November 26, the equivalent of 11.6 days and during that time there will be an unannounced ‘winning moment' where all entries submitted at that time will be eligible to win the 2.0-litre diesel Premium SE Tucson worth £28,345.
