VOLVO never does things by half and that's very apparent in the S60 saloon where attention to detail is evident and effective.

From the outset you know it is different because it is big when the trend is towards smaller cars, and while some manufacturers claim ridiculous fuel economy figures, the Volvo S60 D3 150 actually delivers low consumption.

Inside the spacious cabin and you feel very much at home, possibly it's larger than some modern bijou living rooms, thanks to the generous seats and sweeping facia.

Over 20 models in the range are based on four engines and four trim levels from £21,255 to £36,725, but capable of being upgraded.

The R-Design model driven here is arguably the most popular in the series and it's easy to see why with its good balance of power and economy.

The engine is a quick starter, pulls well and with six well chosen gear ratios it can be encouraged along very smartly and smoothly, oh and did I mention it also sips fuel?

The clutch is light and progressive, the brakes powerful and the throttle light. I liked the precision of the gearchange and the feedback and turning circle to the steering which means it handled very well in urban areas and was not tiring to drive on country roads either.

Secondary controls grouped around the wheel, column and on the console are big and well marked, with a decent sized info-screen and the usual essential dials are also very simple and clear, all backed up by familiar warning lights.

The temperature controls are straight-forward and efficient, selecting and holding any setting with ease and filling the cabin with desired air where you want it and in chosen quantity. Powered windows give passengers extra choice.

Oddments room is very good in the S60 whether you are infront or the back and the saloon has a generous 380 litres boot but it's not a very big opening for boxes, although it easily coped with a couple of suitcases.

Access for occupants was easy with wide opening large doors and the front seats' adjustment range was very good. Once inside the big seats were well shaped to locate you and support on a journey and everyone had room to stretch out.

The big Volvo really soaks up bad surfaces without a problem but with some noise and it does not roll around bends, wallow or pitch.

Handling is good, not agile but it grips well and has no vices to concern you.
