Extra power for

beefy Beemer

IT has better looks - but it is better performance and improved environmental credentials which are set to make the latest BMW X5 range stand out from the crowd.

Expected in the showrooms in June, the premium sport activity vehicle range boasts three new engines with higher power and lower exhaust emissions.

With a figure of 195g/km, the entry-level xDrive30d is the first model in its class to drive under the 200g/km level but an extra 10bhp means there's now 245bhp on tap under the bonnet - sufficient to scoot the car to 62mph from rest in only 7.6 seconds.

At the opposite end of the range, the revised EfficientDynamics powertrain in the flagship X5 xDrive50i features the world's first twin-turbocharged V8 petrol motor, developing a massive 407bhp to get to the benchmark acceleration rate in just 5.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 155mph.

A standard eight-speed automatic transmission also helps lower CO2 output and allows smoother shifting and greater driving dynamics.

The third-generation X5 gets revised front bumpers with enlarged vents and xenon headlights with bright white LED corona rings. At the rear, a revised red light cluster enhances the lines of the car with horizontal LED light bars and larger tail pipes feature in a redesigned bumper.

Inside, seats are covered in Nevada leather and all models include automatic climate control, electronically controlled front seat height and backrest adjustment, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic headlights and wipers - plus a rear compartment entertainment system complete with a TV function.

A wider range of high-tech options are available, including lane departure warning, active cruise control with 'Stop and Go' function, speed limit display and side-view cameras. Prices start at £43,980.
