RENAULT'S first real 4x4 is the Koleos, introduced in 2008 and it's a fine driving soft roader that is quite capable in the rough given that you buy one with all wheel drive.
Some cheaper models only have front wheel drive, but look just the same and will be cheaper to run if you don't need the extra traction.
The Koleos drives easily and well and the two-wheel-drive models are two seconds quicker to 60 miles an hour because of lighter weight.
The 2.0-litre turbo diesel is the only power unit, although in the top model it's boosted to 175bhp rather than 150 in the rest - which is still quite man enough for the weight as well as being smooth, quiet and economical.
The ride is comfortable and refinement is good, with the only wind intrusion from the roof rails as usual.
There is more roll that I would have expected in the corners, and although it clings on well, the front wheels start to slide first when it is pushed very hard.
The clutch is heavier than I expected and although the steering is light and easy at low speeds, it doesn't give the driver much feedback.
Prices look good compared to other recent offerings such as the Ford Kuga, and the interior is well put together.
