Colt hatch is a

not-so-little

stunner

I HAVE liked all the different models of Mitsubishi's Colt hatch I've driven and the 1.3 automatic keeps up the high score.

It's much bigger than it looks out on the road, with excellent headroom, plenty of rear legroom and a fair boot.

The Renault Modus mini-MPV is almost identical in size and performance but the Colt is far, far cheaper to buy and excellent value for money.

The automatic gearbox is a six speed manual with an automatic clutch and works very well, but it's better used as a manual if you want best economy.

The 1.3 engine is slightly noisy towards the top end but has plenty of power for excellent acceleration.

It's a super car to drive, willing and peppy and as quick to change gear as most people but it helps to take your foot off the accelerator momentarily.

The road holding and stability are brilliant, with huge grip, but the ride is on the firm side.

The Colt automatic is one of the top, not-so-small family hatchbacks.

There's a readout for which gear you are in, stereo and cruise controls on the leather covered steering wheel, aircon and electric windows and mirrors.

There's not a great deal of side support in the seats, the rear seat splits and folds for more load room and it also slides forward to give a bigger boot.

It comes with a light hatch, five doors, electric mirrors and windows, a good stereo system and height and reach adjustable steering.
