THERE are just two engine options with Toyota's lovely, sleek Celica coupe built between 1999 and 2006.
The same 1.8 multivalve engine goes into each, but while the lower powered unit produces 140bhp, the top model has an extra 50bhp - and not a turbocharger in sight.
The lower power output is quite enough for most people, giving good acceleration from any speed, but only as long as the revs are kept up.
The 190 is much quicker but develops its power at manic revs and so must be pushed up towards its very high red line much of the time, which can be very wearing.
Both engines are smooth and quiet but with enough noise to keep the driver informed, and they drive the front wheels through a standard six-speed gearbox.
Each was available with a choice of three option packs - Premium, Sport and Dynamic. Premium adds leather and sunroof, Sport brings 17 inch alloys and a rear spoiler, and Dynamic adds the spoiler, side skirts and alloys.
These are stylish cars in standard spec, with a wide range of equipment including air-con, remote locking and electric windows and mirrors. The 190bhp versions get leather and alloys as standard.
All are comfortable, handle well and are very easy to drive but I would go for the 140bhp, because it's easier to live with and just as fast in the real world.
