Super coupe pumps up
the power
IT'S the super coupe with film star style plus price to match - and it's packed with state of the art technology.
In fact Mercedes-Benz is so excited about the October arrival of its high powered CL 63 AMG model that the car is seen as starting a new chapter in what the company calls its Performance 2015 drive strategy.
The German manufacturer is committed to improve fuel consumption and cut emissions on its new models, while reaching heights of performance with its range-topping AMG models.
And this stand-out example in a revamped and improved CL Class line-up set for the autumn pumps up the power with a completely newly developed engine.
It is a 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo unit producing a massive 571bhp with torque of up to 900Nm, mated to a Speedshift 7-speed sports transmission.
With a fuel figure of 26.9mpg, the coupe is actually some 38 per cent more economical than the previous model with a naturally aspirated V8 powerplant, yet with 29 per cent lower emissions at 244g/km.
That's for a car that can storm from zero to 62mph in a stunning 4.4 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph.
Visually, the new CL 63 AMG has a more athletic, confident appearance - the bonnet, headlamps, radiator grille, bi-colour tail lamps and newly designed AMG body styling all adding a more dynamic appeal.
The V8 Biturbo lettering on the mudguards namechecks the new powertrain and there are also AMG triple-spoke light alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish.
New to the interior are the AMG sports steering wheel with silver-coloured aluminium shift paddles and specially shaped nappa leather grip as well as the AMG V8 Biturbo start screen. Splitview is also available as an optional extra for the multimedia system.
The 63 is one of two CL-Class AMG versions and will cost £108,185 while the 12-cylinder CL 65 AMG with 630bhp, is to cost £154,930.
Ola Kallenius, head of Mercedes-AMG said: "We are heading into a new era with the CL 63 AMG. For the first time we have combined spray-guided direct petrol injection with bi-turbocharging and the stop/start system.
"Together with the AMG Speedshift 7-speed sports transmission we have improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions significantly - while at the same time increasing output and torque."
