THE Jeep Wrangler is a tough, serious off-roader and so it can be hard to live with on the road.
The chunky shape appeals to many people who think they would like to own one but take a good drive before you buy.
Until the most recent version came out a couple of years ago, there was no diesel and thirst is a real problem.
But the charm of the garden shed shape has changed little in fifty years and this is the one that started the whole 4x4 idea.
After 1997 it looked pretty much the same but had the big improvement of coil suspension all round.
That is not to say the ride was much less jittery, but it was a bit better. There's lots of roll in the corners even though it does grip pretty well and of course, it has an off-road ability that is hard to believe.
Engines are rough 2.5 four or smooth 4.0-litre V6 petrol but some V6's have a very poor three speed automatic gearbox - avoid like the plague.
There are few creature comforts inside - it's meant to be a workhorse so there are wipe-clean surfaces everywhere.
There is decent legroom front and rear, although it's awkward getting into and out of the back seats, and the boot is tiny. Soft-tops take forever to put up or down.
