A SLEEK four door coupe fitted with the world's first LED headlamp system has been revealed by Mercedes at the Paris Motor Show.

The new CLS will be on sale early next year replacing the original which was launched seven years ago.

Featuring Mercedes' new family of lean burn performance engines will be available initially with a three-litre diesel engine producing 265bhp and a petrol alternative developing 306bhp.

Stop/start systems are fitted as standard to improve economy in town and the line up will eventually a new two-litre diesel capable of averaging 55 miles per gallon - a significant improvement over the current model which at best could average 38 to the gallon.

To keep weight down the four-seater CLS is fitted with aluminium doors, the first time Mercedes has used such construction.

Mercedes is also introducing electromechanical power steering on the CLS which is designed to improve driver feedback as well as using less energy.

High tech safety features include active blind spot and lane departure warnings which stop the car straying into danger.

The LED lighting system will be an option and uses 71 mini lamps which automatically adjust to night-time conditions and illuminate high beam when necessary.

Not only do the lights have a distinctive pattern they are also said to last five times longer than high discharge xenon lamps and give a more natural light.

Pricing has still to be announced but the current CLS range starts from £48,400.
