THE all-new Ford Ranger made its debut at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

The spec includes smart technologies such as adaptive load control, trailer sway control, voice control and the first rearview camera system in a pick-up.

New engines include Dagenham's 2.2-litre diesel with 150bhp, and a 3.2 diesel from Oz with 200bhp. Both will drive either through a six speed manual or automatic gearbox.

When it goes on sale here in 2012 it will be available in three body styles, with 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains and a choice of two ride heights.

There are new chassis and safety technologies and to help reduce ownership costs, a wide range of design features to improve fuel efficiency.

Four-wheel drive models have a well-proven electronically controlled transfer case that allows drivers to shift from 4x2 to 4x4 anytime via a switch.

Ford claims car-like comfort, reduced steering effort, more precise handling and better on-road stability.

Three passengers can easily fit into the second row of the double cab which has good knee room and better space for feet. Ford claims this makes access much easier.

There is new passive safety, including the availability of side curtain airbags on all for the first time.
