Mazda's CX-7 up with
the best 4x4s
MAZDA'S previous CX-7 was a great all rounder but was only available with a petrol engine and that limited its appeal.
The latest model - there is only one - is only available with a 2.2 diesel and it is just about perfect as far as I'm concerned.
It's the engine from the ‘6' and had plenty enough power to lug the extra weight of the 4x4 around.
Performance is good, with a six speed gearbox to make the most of the power, although the gearchange is a little notchy and over-precise.
It is supremely comfortable over all surfaces and also manages to have good body control for fairly swift and very safe road holding.
The level of refinement is good on the move, and the engine is reasonably quiet even when cold - something which other diesels from major players still have a problem with.
Apart from the gearchange - and there's no auto option - it drives much more like a car than a 4x4 and is very easy to live with.
The driving position is adjustable for all sizes, and equipment is excellent, including leather, electric seats, cruise, multi-function steering wheel and completely automatic four wheel drive.
There's loads of rear legroom and the seats fold in a couple of seconds to make an almost flat load area. It even has sat nav and a rear parking camera.
