THE VW Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne are similar cars underneath the skin - designed by the same team and built on the same production line.
But for me, the Touareg rides better, is more pleasant to drive than its sportier stablemate and is also better looking.
Petrol engines are either 3.2 V6 or the Audi 4.2 V8, both of which are fairly thirsty as you can imagine and suffer steep depreciation.
But the diesels start with a five cylinder 2.5 which has 170bhp and this is followed by a 3.0-litre V6 with 221bhp and a thirsty but awesomely powerful 5.0-litre V10 with 308bhp.
The lower two of this threesome are the ones to go for, offering fair to good performance and 25-28mpg economy.
Because they are the most sought after, values hold up well, but you get a big, tough, well-built 4x4 which is very capable in tough off-road conditions and hugely likeable and easy to drive on road.
The big seats are very comfortable and still offer plenty of support and the driving environment is marvellous.
They come with all the electronic aids plus alloys, climate, cruise and CD stereo. Top models get electric heated leather seats and later models will often have sat nav.
