WITH its three rows of seats and as much flexibility and versatility you could wish for, the VW Sharan is the perfect vehicle for anyone who is in constant demand ferrying passengers here, there and everywhere.

Now in its second generation, the people carrier does just what it says on the tin - carries people, but with a certain amount of style and comfort often lacking in other vehicles of a similar size.

The high-seated driving position means excellent all-round visibility and all passengers - even those relegated to the third row - experience a fair amount of room in the light and spacious cabin.

Rear sliding doors make getting in and out much simpler, especially in tight parking spaces and they also make loading odd shaped or bulkier items of luggage that much easier too.

But for me, the fact that impressed me the most was how comfortable the Sharan was - even after a long time behind the wheel. Many rival people carriers deliver a far bouncier and uncomfortable ride and you tend to get out with the odd ache and groan. But not so the Sharan.

The driver's seat is easily adjusted and the reach and height of the steering wheel can be set accordingly to provide a really comfortable position.

All the controls, dials and read-outs are perfectly positioned for ease of use, although the lack of any audio controls on the steering wheel was a bit irritating at times.

But that aside, the creature comforts are plentiful and include a dual zone air con system, all-round electric windows, a sound system with CD player, stop/start technology and plenty more.

Despite its rather bulky appearance, the Sharan proved to be deceptively nimble and agile in its handling. In busy city centre traffic, it cruised effortlessly through the crowds and parking was made easier thanks to the great visibility.

Then on the faster roads, the Sharan performed well beyond my expectations. I initially thought the 1.4-litre engine may lack a little power, but was soon proven wrong as it easily held its own with faster moving motorway traffic. The six-speed manual transmission was very responsive and there always seemed to be that little bit extra power when needed.

VW has fitted the Sharan with a very comprehensive list of safety features including anti-lock brakes, electronic stabilisation, hydraulic brake assist, numerous airbags and automatic door locking.
