Tucson a good 4x4
buy
HYUNDAI'S Tucson is most certainly the ugly bug at the ball but it actually drives pretty well.
It's available with 2.0 and 2.7-litre petrol engines, and with 111, 138 and 148bhp versions of the same excellent turbo diesel.
This is obviously the one to go for if you want best economy but actually, the petrol is quicker and smoother, and does not give too much away in economy.
The Tucson is about the size of a Land Rover Freelander and felt a little slow the first time I drove one.
But both petrol and diesel versions need a heavy right foot to get best performance.
It has a five speed gearbox and the 4x4 system uses front wheel drive on the road, only bringing the rear wheels into action when grip is lost. Two-wheel-drive versions are also available.
The ride is comfortable, if a little lumpy in town, and well-controlled body roll means it takes the corners better than many other 4x4s.
The light, airy cabin of the mid-range GSi has a good spec with all electric windows, remote locking, air and traction control.
