IT'S all about evolution at Fiat with the Punto now emerging in its sleekest, most efficient and environmentally-friendly version yet.

Initially, we had the Punto, then the Punto Grande and the latest incarnation is the aptly named Punto Evo.

With its fresh new styling, attention-grabbing instrumentation and excellent performance the Fiat Punto Evo certainly ticks all the boxes.

And when you add build quality, handling, great safety spec and a very reasonable price tag of less than £14,000, it's clear to see just why Fiat is raving about this little beauty.

The Punto Evo boasts neat lines with body-coloured door handles and mirrors, re-modelled bumpers that provide more style and more protection and distinctive L-shaped rear lights.

And once you take your seat behind the wheel inside, the spacious and ergonomically-designed interior cannot fail to impress with its a smart facia that wraps around the air vents and central console giving the whole dashboard area a smooth flowing appearance.

All the dials are very clear to see and are perfectly placed for driver convenience.

Despite being a three-door hatchback, there is room for rear seat passengers who can travel in comfort, although the space behind a taller driver would be a little limited.

The boot is quite generously sized for a vehicle of this size and the rear seats offer a split-folding option for carrying those larger, bulkier items.

In and around town, the Punto Evo eased through the heavy traffic and the Start&Stop system helped to save fuel too. And there is even a gear shift reminder to prompt the driver in the quest for better fuel economy.

Out on the more open roads, the vehicle easily held its own alongside more powerful cars and the 1.4-litre ultra-efficient MultiAir engine delivered plenty of power and acceleration when required.

However, I did find I was searching for a non-existent sixth gear on occasions. Road-holding was very good and the cabin noise was relatively quiet, even at higher speeds.

The Punto Evo boasts a comprehensive list of safety features including anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability programme with hill holder function, numerous airbags and plenty more besides.
