MY first glance at the latest generation Volkswagen Sharan resulted in a real double take.
Was it new or a mere restyle?
The answer is that although it may look a little similar to the last model, this latest Volkswagen full-sized MPV is a completely redesigned vehicle. The only parts carried across from old to new were the sun visors.
This fundamental change is also reflected in the altered dimensions. The latest Sharan is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor and does have a more powerful looking stance.
The Sharan's key stats include seven seats with a new EasyFold seating concept and sliding rear doors.
Sharan is closely related to the Ford Galaxy and is also sold by the VW Group as the SEAT Alhambra and appears on the market with the choice of four engines - two petrol and two diesel.
My drive was in a petrol version, a 1.4-litre TSI 150ps with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Most MPVs I have driven recently have been diesels and the experience of a petrol alternative was a refreshing change.
The main characteristics were a silent and very smooth drive with a Combined mpg figure of 39mpg emitting a reasonably low CO2 figure for petrol power of 167g/km.
Safety is often high on the list of preferences for MPV buyers, many of whom have children so it is heartening to know that the Sharan has recently been awarded a top Five Star rating in the latest, and very stringent Euro NCAP ratings.
It certainly looks much better than the previous model and the sliding doors are a big asset when access is needed to the rear row of seats. And it is a surprisingly rewarding drive for an MPV with an attainable top speed of 122mph and a 0-62mph sprint of 10.7 seconds.
Inside the Sharan is a typical essay in VW values with high quality trim and very comfortable seats.
It's all done in the best possible taste and should be because this rather swish MPV commands a somewhat high pricetag of £23,470.
It enters a market sector which is still highly competitive, pitching in against models like the Ford Galaxy and Renault Espace.
