Volkswagen Golf Plus
1.6 TDI BlueMotion
VOLKSWAGEN'S Golf Plus first appeared in the UK in June, 2005 slotting into the VW line-up between the Golf hatchback and Touran compact MPV.
Spring of last year heralded the arrival of an updated Golf Plus which, with even more space, style and value for money than its predecessor, comes well equipped to attract the family driver.
The basic Golf Plus range remains as before with S and SE trim levels but alongside these an economical and low CO2 emitting derivative is available.
Referred to simply as BlueMotion Technology, this variant arrived on the UK scene last August, its creators having been charged with producing a vehicle that delivers greater economy and fewer emissions, yet remains conventional to drive, service and generally maintain.
Combining efficiency with comfort and enjoying generous levels of standard kit Golf Plus BlueMotion features a 1.6-litre TDI engine developing 104bhp.
It also includes a number of systems and modifications to optimise efficiency which include a Stop/Start system, auto hold, low rolling resistance tyres and a multi-function computer which provides visual gear change recommendations to help maintain optimum fuel consumption - pretty useful this when used correctly.
As with all Golf Plus models, the new BlueMotion Technology models boast an extensive list of standard safety features which include ABS braking with Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), driver and front passenger whiplash-optimised head restraints and six airbags. In addition, the likes of Climatic semi automatic air con helps to add a pleasing ambience to the interior.
Standing slightly taller on the tarmac than the Golf Hatch, Golf Plus comes with a little more room in cabin and boot plus a higher roofline while offering more flexible seating options and numerous storage compartments cabin side.
A comfortable high-seating driving position delivering good all round vision faces a thoughtfully set out dashboard which comes with stylishly pleasing white illumination. While I did find this easy on the eyes I did miss the tasteful, stress reducing blue backlighting I had become used to from the Volkswagen stable.
However, parking up proved no problem, with the latest generation of "Park Assist" to hand, a visual and audio warning system which assesses distance from surrounding vehicles, the use of sensor technology can help guide you painlessly into the parking bay, once you become accustomed to it.
Despite the extra height the Golf Plus proved pretty nifty on the road with the 1.6 TDI held sufficient low down urge to do business in the overtaking lane, it also proved a smooth operator and fine handler with impeccable road manners, showing that sedate progress over the long haul is also one of its fortes.
