THERE IS no doubting that the crossover market in the UK has taken off in a big way with some very tasty options on offer.

One such is the Mitsubishi Outlander, a model that has recently been significantly enhanced with the introduction of an all-new 2.2 diesel engine on all manual transmission models.

Unlike heavy mud-plugging 4x4s this type of vehicle offers the space, commanding driving position and a modicum of rough track ability without the massive costs of dedicated all-roaders.

And for the first time in the UK, Mitsubishi offers a two-wheel-drive diesel variant to underline its pursuit of lower CO2 emissions.

And the new 2.2 Di-D M/T Mitsubishi engine is proving a wise addition to the Outlander line-up combined with a six-speed manual gear box, being available in two or four-wheel -drive options.

The new engine features commendable driving performance plus enviable environmental credentials, such as more power, lower CO2 levels, better mpg and lower VED tax bands.

There is a 14% increase in power from 154bhp to 175bhp on the manual transmission version plus a 12% reduction in CO2.

The 2WD version in particular features CO2 emissions of just 162g/km.

This vehicle has exceptional styling outside, but for some it may be just too understated and plain inside.

But any shortcomings in this direction are forgiven as soon as you get behind the wheel because this is a very enjoyable drive.

It is surprisingly lively when you consider that it returns nearly 45mpg and is exceptionally poised when cornering - much better than some cars of this type I have driven.

All-wheel-drive is easily selectable and it can be driven with confidence over rough surfaces, but is not designed for heavy off-road work.

The engine is probably a little more noisy than I would have liked but it all adds to the rugged image of what has to be one of the best models in its class.

Equipped as standard with items such as hill start assist, the GX2 four-wheel-drive model is exceptionally well priced at £22,099, slightly undercutting the 2WD model.

Mitsubishi has discovered that fleet and retail sales of the Outlander from 2007 have been very healthy making this the strongest competitor in this segment.

The Outlander can seat up to seven for the school run, or swallow a couple of mountain bikes whole, all done within the footprint of most family estates.
