Chevrolet Cruze

2.0VCDi LT Saloon

CHEVROLET claims the Cruze is where inspiration meets the asphalt -  a nice line but in plainer language it's a decent saloon that provides affordable family motoring.

The 2.0-litre diesel version I drove combines reasonably sassy good looks with a good quality interior.

The funky styling includes swept headlamps, athletic coupe styling and an in-your-face front grille featuring the legendary Chevy badge.

There are three trim levels available for either saloon or hatchback versions with the Saloon S opening the show at £13,805 - the implication being you won't have to break the bank to buy a Cruze.

That remains true as you progress through the LS versions, but arrive at the top spec LT model I tried and ask for an automatic gearbox and the price rises to £18,610 which is perhaps a little expensive for a Chevy, although it comes with all mod cons.

The Cruze is pleasant to drive offering a relaxing ride and handling that springs no surprises on the driver.

The saloon goes where it is pointed efficiently and with the minimum of fuss thanks to good levels of grip and a suspension that is only challenged by roads left unpatched and uncared for following the ravages of winter.

Get behind the wheel and the first thing to notice is the comfortable seat which is easily adjustable to the ideal position.

The steering wheel features controls for a variety of functions including the sound system while the cabin's atmosphere is controlled by an air conditioning system that is simple to operate.

All the buttons, dials and switches are well sited and designed giving an air of efficiency and style that engenders a feeling of well-being.

The boot is usefully large swallowing 450-litres of luggage or shopping thanks to the high tail which can be opened off the key fob - handy when your arms are full of the family's latest purchases.

The powerful diesel means the Cruze pulls like a train and it links nicely with the automatic transmission to provide a pleasing response when the lights go green.

Running  costs are reasonable for the Cruze - which is built in South Korea - with average fuel consumption claimed at a not too shabby 42.8 miles per gallon.

When you hit the motorway the Cruze does exactly what it says on the tin eating up  the miles with the minimum of fuss - and having driven it extensively on country lanes I can vouch for the fact that it is an able performer in this sphere as well.

The LT version is stuffed full of goodies including cruise control - obviously - front foglights, electric windows, automatic headlights and wipers, plus rear parking sensors.

This adds to an already impressive menu for the entry-level LS model which boasts remote locking, a CD player with MP3 link as well as the previously mentioned air con.

Safety systems are similarly comprehensive with stability control included across the range to help keep you out of trouble, while six airbags are fitted to keep you from injury if the worst can't be avoided.
