THE Toyota Corolla is an excellent buy second-hand because it lasts so well, but don't expect them to be cheap.
There have been more Corollas sold throughout the world than any other car including the VW Beetle and the reason is the excellent quality and long term reliability.
Despite some motoring writers saying they are dull, I've always found them good to drive, with a comfortable ride and good handling which is safe, sure and plenty of fun.
The power steering can be a little too light in some corners, but you soon get used to that.
As well as the 1.4 engine there is also a petrol 1.6 with 110bhp and a 1.8 with a storming 189bhp.
There are also 1.4 and 2.0-litre D4D diesels with 89 or 114bhp.
The last Corolla is still very up to date and looks not unlike the Auris which replaced it.
All are comfortable and well equipped, with air con across the range and excellent safety built-in.
There is space for five at a pinch but four for longer journeys. Long service intervals mean that it's crucial to check the car's history. If there is none, walk away.
