IT had to come - it's not in Audi's nature to leave any of its cars for long without breathing hard on them.
So now we have the marvellous sounding A1 quattro with the storming 2.0-litre 256bhp turbo engine from the Golf R, and SEAT Leon FR.
Just 333 of these Tarmac-burning superminis will be made, to keep them exclusive and they will all be left hand drive.
Makes me wonder whether Audi might be trying to homologate a new model for rallying or racing perhaps? We shall see.
Whatever happens, they will be the quickest supermini ever made, with a 0 to 62 miles an hour time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 152mph.
Of course, quattro means it will be all wheel drive with a six speed manual, an electronic differential lock and a stability program with sports mode giving a higher threshold for intervention.
Due in the second half of 2012 the A1 quattro will have a unique equipment list including 18-inch alloys, white paint with black roof, and twin exhausts.
Inside all will be black, with leather sports seats, stainless steel pedals, multi-function steering wheel, parking sensors, cruise control and much more.
