IT seems a long time to wait but the Subaru range will get a huge boost in June with the launch of the brilliant-looking BRZ coupe.
It's the result of a Subaru-led joint venture with Toyota and uses the 2.0-litre flat four Subaru engine, with added tweaks from Toyota to bring power up to a stonking 200bhp and not-a turbo in sight - a proper high revving petrol engine at last.
The whole car has been designed around the driver and with driving enjoyment at its heart.
The BRZ is front engine and rear wheel drive in the true sports car tradition and with that 'boxer' engine and attention to detail, it should have a very low centre of gravity for excellent cornering and handling characteristics.
It will come with six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes and the manual should have a short throw, very slick change.
The automatic will have a manual mode with up and down paddles and a sport mode for increased immediacy of response.
The interior is designed to give the driver the best behind-the-wheel experience. The steering wheel is small and connected to a very fast rack.
The instrument binnacle features a tachometer with a digital speedometer in the centre, giving a one glance view, so the driver can keep his eyes on the road.
