HYUNDAI is going great guns in the sales race in the UK with a revitalised range that demonstrates that this manufacturer has its sights set on the European business motorist.

This is particularly apparent in the i40 which has shrugged off this manufacturer's old cheap and cheerful image to become a rising star in the world of smart saloons and tourers.

Before driving an example, a Premium 1.7CRDi 136PS saloon, I gave it a close examination to find out just how the European influence has pushed this once very humble brand upmarket.

The difference shows in panel fit, shut lines and neatness of finish - especially inside doors with smooth welds and evidence everywhere of a painstaking approach to manufacturing.

It also has a hidden secret which might just give it an extra push in the business market - the lowest Benefit in Kind rating in its class.

And the competitive CO2 emissions figure of 134 g/km plus a combined mpg figure of 55.4mpg and a five year warranty might help with the company's predictions that this car is out to capture more fleet sales with 5-6,000 units forecast for this year.

This is one of the first Hyundais that has what it really takes in the world of smart saloon driving enjoyment and says much about Hyundai's aspirations in the UK.
