I HAVE long been in need of a mid-life makeover and - having just driven the spruced up Avensis - I want Toyota to do it.

The family saloon has been revamped with the latest version pleasing the eye thanks to a new sleek look following a nip and tuck at the front and some impressive work to the rear.

The engines are cleaner, while new trims and the latest gizmos place the Avensis at the cutting edge of motoring technology.

The model I tried featured the popular two-litre D-4D diesel engine which has been reworked to eke out more fuel economy allowing 60 miles-plus to be travelled on a gallon of diesel.

Those who like their motors to boast decent green credentials will be gushing over the new oil burner as carbon dioxide emissions are slashed to 119g/km compared to 139 with the previous version.

This equates to an impressive saving in tax for business users making the Avensis extremely competitive compared to key rivals.

Prices are also pretty keen with the TR version good value for money at a £21,525.

The Avensis has always been decent to drive and the latest generation cruises along the motorway with aplomb as noise reaching the cabin is significantly reduced.

It also handles tight and twisty country lanes with a certain arrogance as sharp steering and plenty of grip give lots of confidence.

The cabin is a step up from the previous model thanks to improved upholstery and a leather steering wheel giving a plusher feel.

The dash looks modern and sleek with decent plastics helping things along.

It also earns top marks for ease of use thanks to the introduction on the core TR model of Toyota Touch & Go - a touchscreen-controlled multimedia and sat nav system.

It highlights how equipment specifications have been raised across the board with even the entry-level Avensis getting air-conditioning and an auxiliary input socket.

Step up to the TR trim - expected to be the most popular - and attractive features are added such as automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, electric rear windows, Bluetooth connection, dual-zone climate control and alloy wheels. There's also a natty push-button handbrake.

If you want leather upholstery and powered driver's seat adjustment you'll have to stretch the budget to the top spec models - but the lack of electricity on cheaper versions is no barrier to finding a comfortable position behind the steering wheel.

The Avensis offers lots of head and leg room while a flat floor makes things easy when it comes to catering for a third rear passenger. The boot boasts cave-like dimensions while the rear seats split and fold. However the saloon body does limit what you can put in.

Safety is not a concern as there are front, side and curtain airbags as well as an additional one under the steering column to protect the driver's knees.

There's a stability control system to help maintain control and active front head restraints if someone else loses it and hits you from behind. In short the Avensis does a decent job of protecting its occupants.

It all adds up to a quality motor that is built exclusively in Britain at Toyota's Burnaston factory in Derbyshire.
