I MISS the long journeys I used to do regularly - looking up a route and finding ways around the hold-ups. And I still come back a different way every time - you never know what you'll see.

So it was in the Chevrolet Cruze turbo diesel recently. I could have done a 150 mile return trip via the motorway and major roads.

But I found a wonderful Roman road and it was as if I had the whole world to myself for a couple of hours.

The Cruze's 2.0-litre diesel is noisy on the outside but quiet and willing on the inside and performance is excellent. The six-speed gearbox has a good change and the clutch is lightish.

There's loads of urge in fourth and fifth gear and despite having to keep the speed down to under 50mph some of the time, the lowest sixth gear can be used. I still got 47mpg.

The ride is a little firm, but the handling and road holding are very good, with excellent grip and decent steering.

Inside, the top spec LTZ comes with sat nav, leather seats, climate control, 60/40 split rear seat, bluetooth and an MP3 slot.

The driving position is excellent, but there's only really room for four adults in comfort. The boot is a very good size.
