MORE model lines, better efficiency, less emissions and a cheaper entry to the experience - little wonder then that BMW is heralding the latest version of its X1 compact crossover.

The new X1 range hits the streets in July with prices from £24,660 - which is £115 cheaper than the current entry level car - with every rear-wheel drive variant now emitting below 130g/km of CO2.

And that's not all. There's now a more dynamic exterior style and upgrades to the cabin along with a new range of diesel engines that, for those combined with BMW's EfficientDynamics technologies, makes the new X1 line-up more efficient than ever.

Beamer fans can now also choose from two new models called Sport and xLine, adding extra choice to the existing SE and M Sport grades, which also receive an increase in standard equipment.

Style-wise, the changes are minor but effective and aimed at reinforcing a sporty message via extended paint surfaces, new headlamps and indicators integrated into the wing mirrors.

Inside, the driver's side of the angled centre console is now shallower while the panel for the sound system and climate control is finished in high gloss black to match the air vent surrounds.

There's also now a storage compartment in the instrument panel as standard, though when the vehicle is specified with sat-nav, this becomes the operational screen for the iDrive system.

The new X1 features a range of diesel engines all based on the German company's 1,995cc, four-cylinder unit featuring common-rail direct fuel injection and BMW's TwinPower Turbo technology.

For variants wearing the 18d badge, the diesel provides an output of 143bhp, which in sDrive form equates to a 0-62mph time of 9.6 seconds and top speed of 125mph, fuel consumption of 56.5mpg and 128 g/km of CO2.

The four-wheel drive xDrive model has the same engine output, but reaching 62mph in 9.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 121mph. Its combined cycle fuel figure is 51.4mpg, with emissions of 143g/km.

The 20d TwinPower diesel engine is also available in both sDrive and xDrive variants, and produces 184bhp for figures of 0-62 in 7.8 seconds and 136mph. Efficiency numbers for the sDrive20d are 57.6mpg and 143g/km of CO2 while the xDrive20d claims 52.3mpg and 143g/km.

BMW says the sDrive20d EfficientDynamics will only be available in rear-wheel drive form with a manual gearbox, and features a 2.0-litre 163bhp diesel engine.

Its Combined fuel consumption figure is 62.8mpg with just 119g/km of emissions yet it can still hit 62mph in 8.3 seconds and reach 133mph.

New flagship model is the xDrive25d, which is only available in four-wheel drive and features a pair of turbochargers working together in sequence.

Upshot is an engine output of 218bhp for a zero to 62mph time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 142mph, added to a 51.4mpg fuel figure and emissions of 145g/km.

All new X1 models feature as standard a six-speed manual gearbox, but a new eight-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is available on every variant apart from the sDrive EfficientDynamics model.

Entry grade SE trim includes the likes of 17-inch light-alloy wheels, two-zone automatic air-con and a multi-function sport leather steering wheel as well as Bluetooth, USB audio interface and black roof rails - with no price increase.

Prices are from £24,660 for the X1 sDrive18d to £31,860 for the xDrive25d.
