VOLVO seems to have struck gold with its all-wheel-drive XC70 model as it combines luxurious comfort and technical wizardry with all the rough tough and rugged off-roading capabilities you could wish for.
It looks great from all angles and has a much lower roofline than its bigger stable mate - the mighty XC90. That results in better aerodynamics and streamlining and makes for a more dynamic driving performance.
Volvo is renowned for producing vehicles that are as safe as houses and the XC70 is no exception with its solid frame, heavy doors and brilliant 4x4 abilities.
In fact, it's very reassuring to know you are behind the wheel of a vehicle quite capable of dealing with anything Mother Nature throws in its path.
But it's not all brawn and steel, because the XC70 certainly has a softer side too. For example, there are perforated leather seats that can be heated or cooled, a premium sound system compatible with all modern day devices, an easy-to-operate sat nav system, Bluetooth connectivity and lots more besides.
All occupants are treated to plenty of room and rear seat passengers have ample leg, head and elbow space. The generously-sized boot - which is opened and closed at the press of a button - can easily accommodate any luggage requirements and there are a number of smaller storage compartments throughout the vehicle.
Despite, its size, the car proved deceptively agile and easy to manoeuvre into tight parking slots. Of course, those parking sensors and cameras are still a huge bonus.
But it's out on the faster motorways that the XC70 really bursts into life. The 2.4-litre, diesel-powered engine provides ample power and torque as the car works its way smoothly through the six-speed automatic transmission.
Cabin noise is pretty low and the driver benefits from excellent all-round visibility.
Volvo has fitted a comprehensive list of safety features to the XC70 to help keep occupants and pedestrians safe and any uninvited visitors at bay.
