Little Mazda ideal

for downsizing

THE Mazda2 built between 2002 and 2007 was based on the Ford Fusion and Fiesta, so had a great starting point.

And it's fine if you don't want too much in the way of performance, because it only got fairly low power engines.

It's an ideal car for those thinking of downsizing in the present economic climate because it is lovely to drive and has very easy, light controls, a good driving position and a vertical rear end to make parking simple and quick.

Mazda's reputation for reliability is far better than Ford can manage and the quality of build is very good indeed. It also has a tight turning circle for those awkward spaces.

Petrol engines are 1.4 and 1.6-litre and there is also a 1.4 diesel but this is very slow.

Both petrol engines are available with an automatic gearbox, but as with all small cars, this does cost in economy and performance. Comfort is very good.

Equipment includes air con, four airbags, electric windows, remote locking, alloys and a decent stereo.

It has an estate-size boot and split folding back seats to make it huge and there is good storage around the cabin.
