IF memory serves the so-called workhorse of the motor world, the estate car, has been around now since the 1940s and each year has seen a big improvement.

My initial encounter came back in the 1970s when I took delivery of my very first company car, a Vauxhall Chevette, which, although a little on the small side, did the required job as a business and family car.

Today's estate cars are much more luxury vehicles, a far cry from those early days when they were usually referred to as station wagons or shooting brakes.

My latest estate experience has been in the Toyota Avensis Tourer which emerged for the 2012 featuring a sharp looking front end delivering some badly needed character.

This British made model comes with a refined interior with fit and finish aimed at equalling the in-built quality recognisable to all Toyota owners.

Engines, too, have also received an eco makeover, bringing down CO2 emission levels while increasing the miles per gallon return.

While the steering still offers up not a lot of feed back there is more of the fun factor to be had from behind the wheel than in its predecessor.

However, the 2.0-litre D-4D turbo diesel is a really impressive piece of kit. Paired with a slick switching six-speed manual gearbox, the 124bhp engine proved smooth and refined delivering a relaxed drive over the long haul.

The 0-62mph line comes in a reasonable 10 seconds and, while fuel consumption over the combined mpg route was a published 62.8mpg and top speed a decent 124mph, its eco qualities also proved a hit with a quite amazing 119g/km CO2 emissions level while insurance groupings, too, are low.

Also adding to the Avensis Tourer's new found strengths are the likes of a reworked grille and lights, plus indicators in the wing mirrors.

Inside there is a comfortable cabin within which the centre console and some attractively assembled plastics catch the eye while decent kit levels include ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, vehicle stability and traction control, electronic parking brake, electrically adjustable door mirrors and full length curtain shield airbags.

The T Spirit model driven here on 18-inch alloys adds the Toyota Touch & Go full map navigation, electrically adjustable and heated front seats plus a panoramic roof while a decent sized load area and one touch rear seats that fold flat will please any estate car fan.

Overall, this Avensis Tourer is a well put together, nicely priced, neatly appointed and roomy family car with a penchant for providing a pleasant drive in all parts.
