THE Volvo S60 R-Design cleans up when it comes to the environment.

The family saloon benefits from the Swedish company's DRIVe Towards Zero strategy as the 1.6-litre diesel engine in the R-Design model I drove now emits just 114g/km of carbon dioxide.

This, coupled with an average fuel consumption figure in excess of 60mpg makes it a formidable operator when it comes to reduced running costs.

The DRIVe system includes a stop/start function that switches off the engine when you, say, stop at a red traffic light and switches it back on again when green is sighted from the cabin and you release the brake.

The automatic gearbox is smooth and efficient providing seamless changes up and down.

The R-Design S60 offers a unique power steering system and chassis, plus 18-inch alloy wheels which enhance its handling.

Volvo has worked hard to achieve a balance between driver appeal and comfort - so while the lowered sports suspension is firm it doesn't threaten your fillings.

The car turns smartly into corners thanks to sharp, accurate steering and good levels of grip that inspire confidence.

The R-Design model also looks the business thanks to neat silver matt door mirrors and distinctive rear exhaust pipes.

The interior is similarly impressive with stylish upholstery, front body-hugging sport seats with side support, aluminium trim and leather steering wheel.

It gives a feeling of well-being and security - cemented by Volvo's legendary commitment to safety which sees the S60 implanted with six airbags plus stability and traction control.

Volvo's city safety system is also fitted which detects objects in front and applies the brakes to prevent low-speed impacts.

You can also specify a driver support pack which adds adaptive cruise control - excellent on motorways cluttered with traffic - and a particularly helpful blind-spot information system that alerts you to encroaching vehicles with an indicator light.

A lane-departure warning system is included and while I can see the point of if you are nodding off in every other circumstance I found it a little annoying.

The interior is comfortable with a range of driver's seat positions plus a height and reach adjustable steering column allowing a comfortable position behind the wheel to be attained.

The interior is modern and spacious with rear seat passengers getting an armrest with storage and cupholders. A five-inch colour screen is the centre-piece of a neat dashboard that is well laid out and easy to use.

The atmosphere in the cabin is well regulated with a pollen filter and electronic climate control ensuring long journeys are anything but a chore.

The boot is a decent size and can easily accommodate the results of a family's weekly trip to the supermarket - or indeed a set of golf clubs and a trolley.

There is lots of leg, head and shoulder room all round with four adults catered for with ease and a fifth able to squeeze in without too much fuss.

This version of the S60 will appeal to families who want a safe and stylish saloon with top class green credentials.
