THERE are an increasing number of cheaper van-based people carriers available now that offer perfect family transport for very reasonable money.

Perhaps one of the less well-known is the Fiat Doblo which, while very van-like in looks, has a very comfortable ride and vast interior space.

Up to 2004 they were all five seaters with a massive boot, but after that another pair of seats was added.

With these folded, there is still a huge load area, and the high roof gives a light and airy feel to the cabin.

Lowly powered 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines are to be avoided if possible and so is the 1.3 diesel for the same reason.

Best bet is the 1.9 diesel, which has either 105 or 120bhp, giving fair performance along with 45mpg economy.

Doblos had a particularly bluff and ugly front end up until 2006, but after that it was revised to make it much better looking.

The driving position is very car-like and comfortable, with good seat and column adjustment, and although the interior is very plasticky, equipment is not too bad.

Reliability has not been a Fiat strong point over the years, but the Doblo comes out much better than other vehicles from the range.
