FORD'S new urban crossover the EcoSport will hit UK streets in the next 18 months.

The compact SUV, unveiled at this week's Paris Motor Show, will line up alongside the next generation Kuga and later the larger, more upmarket Edge model already proving a hit in the US.

And it will be equipped with Ford's strong but frugal 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol powerplant, the 2012 International Engine of the Year, which first went on sale in the Focus this year before being introduced to new B-MAX.

Principal styling features comprise a large front grille, slim headlights and cladding on the side sills and bumpers while kit will include the Ford SYNC in-car connectivity system, which is voice-activated to let users answer phone calls and play music via Bluetooth or USB.

Ford SYNC also includes Emergency Assistance, which directly connects the passengers to local emergency services operators after an accident.

Available driver assistance technologies include anti-lock brake system, Electronic Stability Program, and Hill Launch Assist.

As the first global Ford model to be developed entirely in South America, the new EcoSport has just been launched in Brazil where the original - introduced in 2003 - has sold more than 700,000 examples.

Ford director Nick Collins said: "Ford EcoSport combines the value, quality and fuel efficiency of Fiesta, with the exciting look and feel of a modern SUV.

"Its stylish design should prove a tempting addition for European customers to Ford's B segment range, which already includes the B-MAX compact multi-activity vehicle and the new Fiesta."
