THE supermini sector is one of the most competitive in the motoring world - but there won't be many models that offer the value for money boasted by the Kia Rio.

A curriculum vitae that includes three-cylinders and 1.1-litres is not going to immediately endear you to the ‘eco' engine underneath the bonnet of this Korean cutey.

But take a closer look at the resumé and this oil burner begins to attract attention.

An average fuel economy figure north of 70mpg with carbon dioxide emissions below 100g/km immediately spark the bank balance into wild celebrations, while a low insurance and benefit-in-kind rating do nothing to dampen the party.

The final ingredient in a tasty recipe is provided by an excellent warranty that travels with the car should you decide to sell - giving a boost to its second-hand value. Other engines available with the model include a 1.4-litre diesel and two petrols - a 1.25 and a 1.4-litre.

The latest Rio represents a quantum leap from previous incarnations with a look and feel all its own.

It offers more interior space than ever before thanks to being longer and wider with a windscreen that has been moved forward.

There is more than enough room for five adults thanks to a roomy rear that can swallow three six-footers with all the efficiency of an anaconda.

There's plenty of space in the boot for a family's weekly supermarket shop or a set of golf clubs as the 288 litres of space available matches up well with the majority of the Rio's competitors.

The rear seat also splits 60/40 allowing you to extend the luggage room into the cabin when needed.

Getting to the back seat in the three-door version of the Rio I drove was anything but a chore thanks to front seats that are simple to move forwards and backwards.

The cabin is top-notch with a stylish three-dial binnacle and soft-touch plastics.

There are also 12-volt power sockets and an iPod connection within easy reach of the driver.

The Rio is neat and tidy to drive with a suspension that struggles only with the more extreme humps and hollows masquerading as roads.

The ride is reasonably settled and, while the word ‘sporty' will never be used about this supermini, it is pretty agile around town giving the driver confidence with good levels of grip.

The Rio is in its element in the urban jungle but it's also no slouch on the motorway as it is refined enough to make long journeys pass without complaint.

Engine noise is well contained and a pleasant atmosphere is easily maintained via the efficient air conditioning.

Safety is also well catered for with Kia including six airbags and stability control fitted as standard across the range.

As you would expect with Kia there are plenty of goodies offered as standard with the 2 trim sporting electric windows, air conditioning, front foglights, natty alloys, a CD/radio system and electrically operated door mirrors.

The top-of-the-range 3 model adds climate control, reversing sensors, cruise control, and daytime running lights to the mix.

Buyers looking for a decent supermini that offers excellent value should put the Rio on the short list.
