Volkswagen Amarok

VOLKSWAGEN has ramped up the power of its new Amarok pick-up with an upgrade to its BiTDI diesel engine from 163 to 180PS.

And to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions, the new five-seater double cab also gets the company's BlueMotion Technology featuring low rolling resistance tyres, Stop/Start and regenerative braking.

It means that although the BlueMotion engine is over 10 per cent more powerful than the previous 163PS model, it is 3.9 per cent more economical with a combined fuel economy of 37.2mpg compared to 35.8mpg. Emissions drop by 10g/km to 199g/km.

In addition, towing limits have increased from 2,800 kg to 3,000 kg for manual models while a new eight-speed automatic transmission has been introduced and has a higher towing limit of 3,200 kg.

New features include Bluetooth, front and rear parking sensors, heated washer jets, tachograph preparation, cornering fog lights and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Pulling power for the eight-speed automatic transmission is also up, though the Amarok with this gearbox is only available in Highline trim with BlueMotion Technology and permanent 4MOTION for £25,105 plus VAT.

It achieves combined fuel economy of 35.3mpg with emissions of 211g/km - the same as the standard manual model.

The 180PS BiTDI engine is available with a six-speed manual transmission in Startline, Trendline and Highline trim grades and selectable 4MOTION all-wheel drive, with prices from £19,795 plus VAT.

Fans of the 122PS 2.0-litre TDI can still snap up this engine in the Startline range from £18,795 plus VAT.
