SINCE its launch five years ago the current Ford Mondeo has been the best all-rounder in its sector.

When it comes to reps munching motorway miles or just the challenges and needs of ordinary families, the big Ford is up to the task.

It may not be able to compete with German brands when it comes to prestige but it costs a whole lot less and can be a real used bargain.

I have just tried the most frugal Ford Mondeo yet offered. The 1.6 TDCI Econetic has emissions of 114g/km and has tax advantages for both private and business users.

The car came in Business Edition trim with equipment designed to attract the fleet market.

It costs £1,600 more than the entry-level Mondeo Edge in Econetic trim, and £600 more than the popular Zetec Econetic but for your extra cash, you get a package of additional equipment including an upgraded navigation system with DAB and MP3 functions front and rear parking sensors, cruise control and privacy glass.

You also get standard-fit 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights and chrome trim which adds to the appeal

The Dagenham-built 1.6-litre diesel offers plenty of grunt and is generally smooth and quiet on the move. It is extremely happy at motorway speeds and cruises comfortably and economically.

Very few of the opposition can compete with the Mondeo when it comes to ride and handling and the car always feels well balanced.

The Mondeo's suspension deals with the worst of bumps and copes with all kinds of surfaces. The steering is still among the best in its class and provides plenty of information and feedback to the driver.

The Econetic model should not be dismessed as just a cost-conscious buy. As an everyday family car the 113bhp unit is more than adequate. It has enough power to make overtaking easy and is a relaxed cruiser and will meet the demands of most families.

The level of equipment included in the Business Edition trim makes the Mondeo a fine companion for long or short drives and the kit will match the needs of most drivers.

To sum up the Mondeo Business is a fine choice for company or private drivers, not least because of its low emissions - 114g/km and its combined 65.7mpg and low road tax.

It is a great all-rounder and deserves further consideration.
