Hyundai Veloster
Turbo SE
IT'S the trick most owners of a new Hyundai Veloster won't have been able to resist.
"What do you mean you can't open the door? Just do the same as Johnny the other side, and pull the handle."
Of course there isn't one, because as a 1+2 coupe the Veloster only has a rear door on one side. And by the time Auntie Joan has cottoned on, everyone else is in stitches.
Hyundai says the idea is to make access to the back seats easier than in a traditional three-door car with two side doors and a hatchback tailgate.
That's certainly the case for the passenger with the back door on their side, which is the side those in the know make a bee-line for.
This autumn has seen the Veloster line-up expanded with a new flagship model - and it's a real head-turner.
Low slung and aggressive, the new Turbo SE has some serious presence on the road.
The standard car's layout is retained but with the addition of a new front bumper, radiator grille and front fog lights while the back end gets a revised bumper with new fog lamp design plus round twin exhausts and diffuser.
A longer and wider rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light completes the visual changes along with a red Turbo name plate on the bottom right of the bootlid, and 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts.
Move inside and the snazzy design continues with black leather sports seats and grey side inserts with the word Turbo embossed on the front seat backs.
In the rear a tray running between the seats contains two different sized cup holders but means that this is strictly a four-seater car, which seems a waste.
And because the rear windscreen set-up is split - so there's a gently sloping rear screen with a glass extension of the roofline ahead of it - rear view can prove frustrating for the driver.
There's ample legroom for all though and despite the sloping screen even tall passengers can sit comfortably.
The Turbo SE model is the first to feature Hyundai's 1.6-litre T-GDI engine with a high-compression, twin-scroll turbocharger and tops the range at £21,995, almost £4,000 more than the entry level GDi.
It's a very lively 184bhp unit with strong power output and low end torque and is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission for a top speed of 133mph and acceleration from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds.
Efficiency has also been maximised, so in spite of increased performance the Turbo SE produces CO2 emissions of 157g/km with an official average fuel economy figure of 40.9mpg.
That said, this a car that begs to be driven enthusiastically and everyday driving is more likely to see the Veloster return closer to the mid-30s.
It has plenty to recommend it though and is a model that feels spirited to drive and certainly gets you noticed.
The likes of leather seats, a seven-inch touchscreen sat-nav with media centre and reverse parking camera come as standard along with an upgraded eight-speaker sound system.
A tilt and slide panoramic sunroof adds another £950.
