Peugeot estate is
top of the class
THERE was a time when I covered many thousands of long distance miles every year but these days it's nowhere near as much.
Still, it's great to have the right car when a longer trip does come along and I did the last one in the Peugeot 508 HDI SW turbo diesel estate.
It was the higher powered 163bhp version and believe you me, it really flies. Acceleration in fourth and fifth of the six speed gearbox was excellent, and my long trip was covered with consummate ease.
As well as this performance, it is also agile and nimble, belying its size, and taking the corners with marvellous balance and strong grip.
It is right up there with the best in class Ford Mondeo, but I have yet to drive the new Mazda6, and that, if experience is anything to go by, could prove to be better still.
The ride is also brilliant, firm but never uncomfortable, even over some fairly uneven back roads.
Refinement is excellent inside and the feeling is one of plush opulence in the Allure I drove, which is fairly close to the top of the range.
It comes with parking sensors, aircon, USB, alarm, Bluetooth, cruise, sat nav, paroramic non-opening glass roof, electric heated seats, keyless entry and half leather trim.
