THE Hyundai Tucson is few people's idea of a good looking 4x4 but it actually drives well and is easy to live with.
Although there are two petrol engines - a 2.0-litre and 2.7 V6 - but the best models to go for are the three very good turbo diesels, all of which are the same 2.0-litre size and with power ranging from 111 to 148bhp.
These give better economy than the petrol models but actually the petrol 2.0-litre is quicker and smoother and its economy is not too bad.
The Tucson is about the size of a Ford Kuga and felt a little slow the first time I drove one. Both petrol and diesel versions need a heavy right foot to get best performance.
All have a five-speed gearbox and the 4x4 system uses front wheel drive on the road, bringing the rear wheels into play only when necessary.
The ride is comfortable and a well-controlled chassis means it takes the corners well too.
There is plenty of room for four and enough for five, with a large boot, a 60/40 split folding back seat and six airbags.
The light, airy cabin of the mid-range GSi has a good spec, with all electric windows, remote locking, aircon and traction control.
