Chevrolet Cruze 1.6
LT
CHEVROLET may have been selling cars around the world for close on a century, but admits to never having had a global vision.
At least the American icon didn't have one until the launch of its mid-size saloon the Cruze just over three years ago.
Described as the brand's first truly global vehicle, the Cruze was a catalyst - and since its arrivalĀ Chevy's sales have grown by a whopping 38 per cent.
So much so that the company, amid claims of being the world's fastest-growing major automotive brand, has now issued a new vision.
Under the banner Find New Roads, the philosophy is all about doing the right thing for consumers as Chevrolet develops new products and technologies for sale in more than 140 markets.
Meanwhile the car that set the wheels in motion, the Cruze, goes from strength to strength - particularly in the case of the five-door hatchback which offers plenty of metal for the money.
More practical and sporty looking than its saloon sibling, the hatchback has an engine line-up comprising 1.6 and 1.8-litre petrol units and 1.7 and 2.0-litre diesels.
The 1.6 version is a far cry from the models which claimed a 1, 2, 3 for Chevrolet in the 2012 World Touring Car Championship, a series the manufacturer has now withdrawn from.
That said the 124ps and 0-62mph in 11.6 seconds is adequate for family motoring in a car that's both smooth and easy to drive, though the steering could feel more positive.
Three trim grades of LS, LT and LTZ see even the most basic cars blessed with the likes of electric windows, remote central locking, air-con, follow me home headlights and MP3 connection while LT adds parking sensors, cruise control, front fog lamps, 16-inch alloys and leather steering wheel.
Inside, the dash, fascia and seating combination can look a bit drab, but there's plenty of room for five adults plus a large, quite deep, boot that's extended thanks to 60-40 split/fold rear seats.
Need to stash oddments and a glovebox, coin tray, central container, door bins with cupholders and flip-up tray on top of the dash will take care of business. You also get a five-year warranty.
Since its launch in 2009 more than 1.7 million Cruzes have been sold, and last autumn's addition of the Sports Wagon estate marks the tenth new Chevy to join the party in just 18 months.
With valuable sponsorship deals in place with both Liverpool and Manchester United too, it seems certain we will be hearing a lot more from Chevrolet.
