MERCEDES' small MPV, the B-Class, has huge interior space and a decent range of smooth, quiet engines.
I would like to have driven the cheaper versions, because the 220CDi BlueEFFICIENCY Sport at the top of the range - which was all that was available - comes with sports suspension.
You know my feelings about that - it spoils the ride for very little improvement in handling and road-holding.
However, the 220CDi does not ride too badly most of the time and does everything else beautifully.
It comes with a seven speed, smooth changing automatic gearbox, with paddles behind the steering wheel for those who want to do it themselves.
There is a good surge of acceleration from almost any speed and it changes down easily and in exactly the right places as you slow down.
The steering is a little lacking in feedback but economy is brilliant and it comes with start/stop to help.
There is space for four to ride in complete comfort, but five would struggle over anything but shorter journeys.
It is very expensive for a family hatch but equipment includes umpteen airbags, stability control, leather-look interior, multi-function steering wheel, air con, and attention assist to warn of driver fatigue.
