TODAY'S small cars are getting better and better as manufacturers try and tempt us to downsize for better economy and lower emissions.
One of the latest superminis to come out with superb eco credentials is the Mitsubishi Mirage, a five-door hatch with decent rear legroom and a perky nature.
I drove the 1.2-litre MIVEC 2 and the smooth three cylinder engine is very willing, giving good acceleration in town, and even enough at high speeds on the open road.
It has a very light clutch, slick five-speed gearbox, a good left foot rest and excellent brakes.
Economy is aided by good automatic start/stop and the whole car feels good from behind the wheel.
The ride is a little bouncy in town, but not as bad as many others and it is more comfortable as speed increases.
It's not particularly noisy and it would be quite capable of longer journeys without being too wearing.
It comes with aircon and, although the boot is small, a split folding back seat gives extra space.
There's an eco meter to help keep fuel consumption up, rear parking sensors, the huge help of keyless entry and starting and electric mirrors and windows.
