THERE are still very few diesels that produce as much smooth, quiet power as the Kia cee'd from a 1.6 engine.

And it is just as good to drive as most European rivals but comes in at a much more reasonable price if you hunt for the discounts.

I drove the cee'd 2 ISG, which was reasonably quick, very refined and capable of over 70 miles per gallon. Now that's what you call economy.

It pulls easily and quietly from low revs in a way that the VW 1.6 just can't match - and that has 20bhp less.

The ride is excellent over all kinds of surfaces - even on one of my worst country lanes and over the potholes around town.

So the suspension is just right, soft enough for comfort and yet still coming up with great roadholding.

It also handles well, with decently weighted steering and excellent balance in the corners.

Even lower order cars come very well equipped, putting some other car makers to shame, and this medium model comes with aircon, cruise, electric folding mirrors, rear parking sensors, stability and traction control and alloys.
