HYUNDAI'S third generation of the Santa Fe has a lot on its plate.
Launched late last year the Koreans are hoping it retains the loyal UK fanbase that has seen 37,500 motors shifted since its debut in 2001, while also attracting new buyers through the showroom door.
To meet this challenge the latest Santa Fe has a fresh modern design inside and out, a new two-wheel drive version and additional gadgets and gizmos.
The front-wheel drive entry-level model I drove is Hyundai's response to the fact that a large number of SUV owners, including business users, do not need four-wheel-drive and are keen to reduce their fuel and tax bills.
The updated 2.2-litre CRDi engine under the bonnet makes light of powering the Santa Fe from 0-62mph in a shade under ten seconds.
But more importantly it offers significant money-saving improvements in fuel economy and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
Hyundai claims the two-wheel-drive model will get 47.9mpg on the combined cycle while emissions fall below the 160g/km level for the first time.
The six-speed manual gearbox is pretty slick while the ride and handling are smooth thanks to reasonable levels of grip and a suspension that's been stiffened up especially to cope with the UK's abysmal roads. Body roll is well controlled in corners while the steering is light and agile.
The five-seat model is spacious with the boot sporting cave-like dimensions that easily cater for a family's needs. A seven-seat version is available - for those with football teams to transport - which features a third row of seats that fold up from the boot floor.
Practicality and versatility are assured while the Santa Fe is easy to live with on a day-to-day basis thanks to well-sited and designed storage bins and cubby holes which provide a home for numerous odds and ends.
There are three trim levels offered beginning with the entry-level Style model I drove which comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured door handles and door mirrors with integrated indicator lights.
It all adds up to a dynamic-looking exterior which is complemented by a cabin boasting an elevated driving position, heated front seats, driver's seat electric lumbar support, Bluetooth with voice recognition and a decent audio system which can be controlled via controls on the steering wheel. Also included are reversing sensors and air-conditioning.
The dashboard is glitzy but there's substance with the style as everything is clearly labelled and simple to use.
Move up to the Premium or Premium SE models and Hyundai throw a vast array of comfort, safety and luxury features at you such as dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof and touch-screen satellite navigation.
Good quality materials are used in the interior and the seats are comfortable making the Santa Fe a pleasant place to spend a long journey.
There are a number of added safety features on all models including hill start assist, stability control and trailer stability assist for those towing caravans. There are also seven airbags should an accident be unavoidable with a pedestrian-friendly bonnet to help minimise injuries in the event of a collision.
The Santa Fe will appeal to those who want a sport utility vehicle with lots of space and a price-tag that won't break the bank. There is also the comfort of a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty package which also covers roadside assistance.
