Hyundai cuts compact

SUV price

Hyundai ix35

HYUNDAI'S revamped ix35 compact SUV will cost from £16,995 when it hits the streets next week.

That's £560 cheaper than the current entry point to the popular line-up, yet boasts extra kit and new options - several of which are available on the model for the first time.

Trims for the newcomer now comprise five spec grades - entry-level S, mid-range SE and SE Nav and two flagship trims called Premium and Premium Panorama.

Retained are the existing 1.6-litre GDi petrol and 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre CRDi diesels, but for the latest model year Hyundai is offering Intelligent Stop & Go as an option on the 1.7-litre CRDi.

Other changes to the engine line-up include the arrival of a six-speed automatic transmission on the 2.0-litre 136PS 4WD model which replaces the current 181PS unit and provides improved fuel consumption - 41.5mpg versus 39.3mpg previously - and lower emissions of 179g/km as opposed to 189g/km.

New standard features across the range includes LED daytime running lights and LED positioning lights, tyre pressure monitoring and trailer stability assist, while inside there's upgraded audio and sat-nav.

The Korean brand has also upgraded the ix35's chassis and suspension set-up to improve ride and handling.

The line-up starts with the S 1.6-litre GDi 2WD manual at £16,995 and includes 16-inch alloy wheels, remote central locking with alarm, USB and AUX connections, air-con, cooled glove compartment, trip computer, hill start and downhill brake control.

SE trim, from £18,495 for the same engine, adds larger alloys, Bluetooth, cruise control,  front fog lights, heated seats, rear parking sensors and leather steering wheel.

SE Nav models cost £1,000 more than each corresponding SE, adding stuff like sat-nav and rear view parking camera, and the flagship 2.0 CRDi 4WD Premium Panorama automatic tops out at £27,755.

Hyundai's UK chief Tony Whitehorn said: "The ix35 is one of the fastest-selling models in our product range with just under 30,000 units sold in the UK since launch in late 2010.

"The new ix35 will continue this trend as it offers retail and corporate buyers a stylish, practical and safe vehicle that is equally at home in the city as it is out of it."
