THE fortunes of the estate car seem to have come full circle. They were once seen as the ultimate vehicle for practicality and versatility, then they were viewed with distaste as ugly, box-like load-luggers, but current models boast aerodynamic streamlining along with plenty of other eye-catching features.

A great example of these attributes is the stylish VW Passat Alltrack with its sleek lines, matt chrome plated roof rails, twin tailpipes, smart alloys, body-coloured off-road bumpers and neat light clusters.

The interior is crammed with first class techno treats and plenty of driver aids that help keep this four-wheel-drive model safe and sound whatever the terrain or task in hand.

Features include stop/start technology, dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control a highly efficient touch-screen DAB radio and sat-nav system , CD player, eight speakers, a multi-device interface with USB and iPod cables, Bluetooth connectivity, electric windows, rain sensing wipers and automatic headlights plus plenty more besides.

There is a toughened underbody, engine guard and side sills to protect the body when tackling difficult surfaces and the off-road suspension has also been raised.

Inside, the Passat offers excellent comfort for up to five adults and there will never be any luggage restrictions as the generously-sized boot is capable of holding 603 litres with the seats up and 1,731 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

And although the Passat must be classed as exceptionally capable and practical, there has been no compromise on the performance front.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine powers the car to 62mph from a standing start in just 8.9 seconds and it tops out at 131mph.

There is a constant supply of power on tap as the vehicle moves automatically through the six-speed transmission. The ride is incredibly smooth with very little engine or road surface noise.

Another plus factor worth noting is just how economical the Passat Alltrack is. VW claims it can achieve combined fuel efficiency of 47.9mpg and I managed to see 45.2 on a lengthy test drive incorporating busy villages and motorways.

Admittedly, the vehicle's length makes parking a challenge, but there are front and rear sensors to assist the driver.

Safety features are comprehensive and include anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control, numerous airbags and lots more.

The car also came fitted with a number of optional extras such as an upgraded infotainment system, automatic distance control with city emergency braking system, an electric tailgate, a swivelling tow-bar, upgraded leather upholstery with heated seats and metallic paint. These added an extra £5,345 to the £31,760 asking price.

All in all, the Passat Alltrack was a pleasure to drive. It coped with busy city centre traffic as well as the more open roads. It offers a neat combination of excellent versatility along with comfort and quality throughout and all with a price-tag that won't break the bank.
