COMPETITION for number one spot in the executive market is fierce and car manufacturers have to ensure their vehicles stand out for all the right reasons.

Some companies pack their cars with state-of-the-art technology and gadgets, others offer seats with massaging functions and some even rely on their reputation alone to attract attention.

Audi though offers an array of attractions neatly packed into one very attractive premium package.

In fact, the A5 Sportback is a perfect example of all-round bundles. It oozes quality with its sleek, sporty and streamlined stance, excellent comfort levels, a comprehensive range of on-board techno treats and outstanding driving dynamics.

The A5 looks stunning from any approach thanks to its bullet-like aerodynamics, 18-inch V-spoke design alloys, body-coloured door handles and door mirrors, sweeping headlights and tinted windows.

The interior oozes class and sophistication with its leather upholstery, elegant dashboard, dual-zone air conditioning, sat-nav via a clear colour screen, a rear parking camera and sensors, Bluetooth connectivity and most importantly Audi's highly impressive multi-media interface which offers access to all the car's creature comforts in an easy-to-operate manner.

If it's music you want, the car comes with a built-in jukebox loaded with music from all genres. And the quality of sound is pitch perfect.

Comfort levels are good for all occupants and back seat passengers can really stretch out in style. I did find getting in and out of the driver's seat a little unusual initially as you seem to climb in around the door pillar - and I don't have my seat that far back.

The boot can cater for 480 litres worth of luggage and with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats down this capacity increases to 1,283 litres. Elsewhere there are a number of handy storage options, including a generously-sized glovebox, deep central bin, cup holders and door pockets.

And when it comes to performance the A5 Sportback is certainly no slouch. The 2.0-litre diesel-driven engine delivers plenty of oomph and there is a constant supply of power on tap as the car moves smoothly through the six-speed manual gearbox.

Road-holding seems effortless and tight bends can be attacked with confidence. All bumps, dips and potholes are easily absorbed along the way and there is next to no engine or road surface noise to speak of.

There are different driving modes to choose from - auto, dynamic, individual, efficiency and comfort. These all change the way the car handles and responds.

According to Audi, the A5 Sportback can deliver 61.4mpg and features such as the auto stop/start help it achieve such impressive figures. But the car is quite capable of delivering an edge-of-the-seat performance when required with a 0-62mph sprint time of just 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 142mph.

As one would expect, Audi has packed a comprehensive array of safety features into the car. As well as the more instantly recognisable systems, it included an optional Technology Package with features such as adaptive cruise control with braking guard and Audi active lane assist.

All in all, The Audi A5 Sportback is a true executive car with a premium feel to it. But the price-tag is equally as impressive costing £31,175 rising to £35,045 with the options fitted.
