Peugeot 2008 1.6
e-HDi 115 Feline
IF there's such a thing as a supermini for all seasons then it's probably the Peugeot 2008.
That extra zero in the number distinguishes the compact crossover from the model on which it is based, the 208 supermini.
And while there are distinct similarities between the two - notably a small steering wheel that gives an extra sporty feel to both - the 2008 is much the more versatile car.
The five-door, five-seater has proved an instant hit for the French manufacturer, with UK orders booked up until the spring.
It's easy enough to appreciate why. The tested model in top spec Feline trim may be loose change shy of twenty grand with a couple of extras thrown in but you don't really have to spend anything like that much.
For instance the line-up actually kicks off with a capable and economic 1.2-litre petrol Access + grade model for £12,995, while 1.4-litre diesels add another £1,300.
For that money you get a smart looking vehicle designed for town, country and coast, with an upmarket interior and firm, comfortable seating with room for three across the back.
Five floor rails which run from the sill to the front seats plus a half dozen chromed hooks helps objects be properly secured and there are various stowage compartments - trays, pockets, boxes, drinks holders - around the cabin.
The official fuel figure is an average 57.6mpg for the 1.2 petrol, with CO2 emissions of 114g/km, while the HDi can return 70.6 with emissions of just 104g/km.
Although the 2008 is front-wheel drive, some models have been fitted with a slick traction control feature called Grip Control which has five operating modes selected via a rotary dial.
Apart from standard mode there are settings for snow, all-terrain like mud and wet grass, sand and an ESP Off mode which gives full control to the driver.
It works well combined with the 2008's 165mm ground clearance and comes with Mud&Snow tyres on the two higher trim grades - Allure and Feline.
Opting for these trims, and the 115bhp 1.6-litre e-HDi diesel engine, costs more but ensures plenty of kit like a panoramic glass roof with ambient lighting and sat-nav.
